The Ripple Effect: How Global Events Shape Everyday Lives
When we watch the evening news or scroll through headlines, it’s easy to feel detached. A conflict halfway across the world? Economic policies debated in international summits? Natural disasters in countries we’ve never visited? It’s natural to think, That doesn’t affect me. But what if it does? What if the quiet flutter of global events creates a chain reaction that reaches your doorstep, subtly or with a bang, and changes your life in ways you never imagined?
This is a concept I’ve been fascinated with for years, and it’s the heartbeat of my first three books, The Playground Diaries trilogy. The stories are fictional, yes, but they’re rooted in my own experiences—years of traveling, building businesses, and living in different countries. These adventures gave me a front-row seat to the real-life dramas and stories that often unfold quietly, in the background, only to ripple outward with astonishing force.
Seeing the World Through a Connected Lens
In Cyprus, a small Mediterranean island steeped in history, I began to notice something profound. Despite its picturesque beaches and laid-back lifestyle, Cyprus is deeply connected to global politics. It’s a strategic hub where the interests of larger nations converge. Decisions made in distant capitals like Washington, Moscow, or Brussels often found their way to the island, impacting trade, tourism, and even the social fabric of its communities.
For years, I observed how these ripples reached ordinary people—shop owners, teachers, and farmers. The sanctions against one nation might lead to a surge in certain goods smuggled into another. A political upheaval in a neighboring country could flood local towns with refugees, reshaping the community dynamic. I began to see the threads connecting the world in unexpected ways.
But the most poignant realization came with Ukraine, a country I hold dear. There, the stakes felt higher. Ukraine is a nation that has repeatedly found itself at the crossroads of history, often caught between the interests of larger powers. What might seem like a political chess move on a global scale—an annexation, a ceasefire agreement, a pipeline dispute—has profound consequences for everyday Ukrainians. Families are separated, livelihoods are disrupted, and lives are forever altered.
The Human Cost of a Butterfly Effect
In the trilogy, I explore how global events filter down to the lives of average individuals. In the first book, set in Cyprus, the story follows the quiet manipulations of power as characters navigate a world that seems distant from the epicenters of action. But as the series progresses into Ukraine, the stakes intensify. What starts as abstract political maneuvering explodes into tangible human cost—people losing homes, children growing up in the shadow of war, and lives pivoting on decisions made in rooms they’ll never enter.
The final book brings the narrative to London—a city that, in many ways, symbolizes hope and resilience to me. It’s a place where the ripple effect comes full circle, highlighting how even in seemingly stable environments, we are not immune to the undercurrents of global events even in seemingly stable environments.

Why It Matters
This interconnectedness is something we all need to recognize. The world may feel vast, but in truth, it’s intricately woven. A policy decision in Washington might influence oil prices in Europe, which could raise heating costs for a family in a small village. A drought in one country could lead to higher food prices globally, tightening household budgets everywhere. A single cyberattack on critical infrastructure could ripple through the economy, causing disruptions we’d never anticipate.
The butterfly effect is real, and its wings flap over all of us.
